Those of you who send your hides to get tanned…I have always sent my hides raw and nothing split or turned. Has anyone here ever done this and switched to salting and just getting your hides pickled and shaved, and then using your own brush on tan?…Im trying to get ready for next season, and I would like to know if saving the little bit of money salting and tanning myself is worth the trouble..Im already swamped at deer season skinning and gutting and processing meat!..Any suggestions would be nice. Im currently paying $60.00 for tan, salt, and turn..but then the shipping of raw frozen hides.

Justin, First of all if you are getting your capes fleshed, split, salted, pickled and tan for 60.00 dollars please tell me where!!! OK for me I personally like to tan and control my own skins, especially after the pickling process. I do similar to Hackleback, I like to send the first few off and then do the rest myself. I only have them pickled and shaved. I send them split and salted. That allows me to complete the tanning process in house. I am very partial to the HQ 5000 tan. I actually have everything I personally do in the tanning process typed up for my students. If you want a copy I can email it to you.

Split turn salt send to Carolina fur. Then you save 15$ a cape and get an awesome wet tan.
