OfflineHello, my name is Spiede and I’m new to the forum and to taxidermy.
My boyfriend found a fox tail on the side of the road a few days ago and neither one of us know the best way to preserve it. It’s getting a little stiff and still has a little bit of blood on the fur. I’d really like to keep it, but I don’t know what to do. My boyfriend dabbed the fresh part with salt and I’m about to throw it in the freezer until we figure out how to persevere it.
Any and all help would be very appreciated!
Put it in the freezer right now until you get ready to work on it. You are going to have to split the tail open down it length and take out the tail bone. Using a dry preservative might work but it will be very stiff when it dries. If you want it to be flexible you need to tan it. Also, foxes are delicate and it doesn’t take them long to start spoiling. If it has started to spoil already all the hair will start falling out soon. That is the nature of these critters. Good luck!

OfflineIt’s in the freezer now. Would an X-acto knife work for cutting? & I would like it to stay flexible. How would I go about tanning it?
Before putting the tail in the freezer I messed around with it a little. I can tell that it’s starting to stiffen, but not that much. It doesn’t seem like the hair is falling out, so hopefully I didn’t wait too long to put it in the freezer
