How does a person go about learning how to score antlers? I am not looking to become a pro at this or anything like that. It would just help if I knew a bit more about it when I purchase a rack and the seller says, “This should score in the 140 class”.

Go to Boone and Crocket.com and it explains the process pretty well…..DC

u can also find scoresheets that are rather self explanatory, I believe there r a couple in the back of the Deer Hunter’s Almanac which is put out by D&DH magazine each year… u could also probably find some pdf file versions online

As an official measurer for a few Record Books, as DC already mentioned the B&C site will have score charts that you can download that are pretty much self explanatory.

The World Championships used to have scoring seminars. I took one a few years back. I became a scorer for Safari Club International until they decided we had to pay dues to be a member. I decided I wasn’t going to pay them for a service I provide for free. I now score for Missouri Show-Me Big Bucks Club and Archery Big Bucks of Missouri.

Check the schedules at the various shows (state, regional, national, world) to see if they are offering classes.

The forms are pretty basic, but there are things that you won’t find on there, such as how to deal with tines that are fused together, webbing, etc.

Good luck! =)

Thanks for the information guys. As I said, I am only interested in rough scoring. I don’t need anything certified or accurate to a quarter inch. I did find the B & C sheets on their site and I think it will tell me enough for what I want.

Like others I quit scoring peoples antlers, first if you prove they are smaller than in their mind they get made and then everyone who kills a deer of anykind with antlers wants you to score them and its for free. So screw it I am done with the BS P&Y B&C Buckmasters all of them!

Learning to score trophies becomes a nightmare at times. You can’t charge for your time..for any record book method and you don’t make many friends and tend to loose clients when the racks fall short of what they are thought to be………..so don’t advertise that you score….and if you do….CHARGE for it and don’t become an Official Measurer.
