OfflineIs was wondering if there were any of you out there that send their life sized foxes, bobcats or coyotes to a professional tannery? Do any of you send all of your mammals to a tannery or do you just send some and then tan the rest in house? I currently tan all of my small to medium sized mammals in house but was contemplating sending them to a tannery to free up more of my time for mounting. For those of you that do send off foxes and bobcats, are the hides in good condition when they come back or are there a lot of issues with slipping hair on the tails or other damage? Just trying to weigh the pros and cons of sending them off.
Ryan, CFD tans thousands of small game pieces a year, so to answer your first question yes there are many people who send them out.
You always take a chance of there being issues when dealing with chemicals and humans. The bottom line is if you do your part and prep the skins properly, you stand a lot less chance of having slippage and damages from shavers trying to remove chunks of meat or holes cut from not having lips eyes etc not split.
Remember you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken sh!t and your skins should be fine, at CFD anyway. I can’t speak for other tanneries.
