Go to pool supply and get a gallon of Baquacil. I use just enough water to cover the skull and a cup and 1/2 baquacil. Leave about two days, take out of solution, rinse lightly and put in sun. Of course your skull needs to be clean and degreased before you put in solution.

A friend of mine got lazy with his bear skull, and took his time fleshing it. When he finally set aside a day to do it, he was called out to work. Now ordinarily, he would have taken it with him, but this time he was going stateside for work and didnt want customs taking it.

So with it stanking nasty, he took it to his Dad’s place and buried it in the garden. So when I ( I mean he) gets home, what s the best way to salvage the skull before bleaching it?

Or does he need to put on a SCBA and dive in with a knife?

He appreciates any suggestions, and hates ridicule.

Your problem is that your using the creme ,it is the wrong stuff , the creame has an oil in it that’s what will give you the yellowish look ,it needs to be the clear stuff ,if it were me I would degrease it a couple more days and try again ,as for the basaquil it will and does work wonders but be warned it will turn some skulls pink ,I have read it in the past and never seen it happen up until last year ,it happened to me and it took a long while to get back to normal color

Keep in mind some of the whitening agents need a little heat to work good. Not a lot but just keep it somewhere warm. Also I have had some issues with it drying out and falling off before it does it’s job. After that I started wrapping the skulls in a plastic bag to keep it from drying out. Keeps good coverage.

Heat activates the peroxide.  I whiten the last step is heat. I use pure B.O.for a 12 hour sit. For deer I lay paper towel over the top of skull to keep the foam from creeping up on the antlers.  Then remove and set under heat lamp or in front of heater. Use caution when doing bobcats and other delicate skulls. Keep a eye on them so you don’t wreck the nasal ans small bones

I have used the 40 volume creme and the clear and there wasn’t a difference you just have to make sure to mix it with the basic white extra strength powder. You mentioned that you use 40 volume creme you should also be mixing it with basic white extra strength powder to a pancake batter like consistency wrap in plastic or not its a personal choice it needs to have heat to activate it, this has to be done a few times not coming out completely white could be it still needs to be degreased.

After cleaning the skull I use 40% liquid peroxide from my wife’s beauty salon. Been using it for years and had no problems. Just brush on and sit in the sun.

I have no idea if this is the best way but for small skulls I simmer them in sal-soda and scrape off the meat and fat then put them in hydrogen peroxide for a few days.  After that I put them in the sun and them come out pretty good for the most part.  They are not white white but are ok by me (they are just for me, not for anyone else).  Although I would like to get them whiter if someone can add to this!

I am thinking of experimenting with a raw bear skull I have.  It still have lots of meat and the brains and all in it.  I was planning on burying it in my garden.  Has anyone else done this and how has it worked for you?  After you recovered the skull what else did you do?

I never done the garden thing. I tend to use a stronger peroxide when whitening skulls.  You will find that placing under a heat lamp may work better than leaving them outside under the sun. I have found that it. I really shy away from any simmering.  I do simmer when the skull is just to big. But I rather rot them off in water. It does not draw the grease into the bone like simmering does
