The reason none of the taxidermists in your area are getting more than $300 for a shoulder mount, is because they are SCARED to ASK for more than that. The best comment I hear in my shop (MANY times) is this. “You are a hundred dollars higher than (insert name), but I’ll GLADLY pay it”.
100 deer at $300 each is a nightmare. He will work LONG hours to get them done, only to GROSS about 15 thousand dollars (minimum wage AT BEST). No thanks. Only HE knows what his work is worth. There are NUMEROUS taxidermists in very economically depressed areas that charge well over $500 for deer shoulder mounts. If you do good work, and supply good service (mainly turnaround times), you will get plenty of work. It has been proven MANY times.
Ron you are right. I’m at $525 I don’t’ have 100 but I have work and I’m the highest priced around. There are a couple other taxi’s around here that are hovering around the $500 mark and they have work as well. Just imagine if the $300 guy charged $500 how much money he would make then. I know people will pay it it’s just a select few. If we all(in-my area) charged about the same it would come down to quality of the mount and not be about price like it is so many times. I think more often than not people can’t see past the antlers. Hell year before last I went up mid season and still got work so I know they will pay it. I guess it does come down to what you think you are worth.
