I am new to taxidermy and do it as a hobby for myself and family. I have done about 10 mounts. I shot a mule deer in Wyoming last year and while caping it out discovered several tics and the ears were full of them as well. I salted and froze it immediatley. Do I have to be concerned about these tics after thawing out the hide for fleshing? Is there any precautions or method of treating the hide prior to fleshing to kill the tics? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Never salt and freeze. One or the other is fine. But both together cause all kinds of problems. Are the ears turned and face split yet? If not you need to get the thing prepped ASAP or it will be so dry you can’t get it turned without rehydrating, which can cause slippage problems.
Ticks are a part of taxidermy, as far as Im concerned it comes with the job.
