OfflineIm just curious how long it takes you guys to completly turn and flesh a deer cape? And Id also like to hear what some of you do to clean the skull plate of a deer after you cut it off the head? I’m not scared to say that it is taking me 6ish hours to turn and flesh everything on a deer, and an hour and a half or so scraping on the skull plates. I sure hope I’ll get faster at this but I want to make sure I do a good job and turn everything all the way. Maybe Im turning stuff to far? Either way Id like to know how long its taking others. Any hints to cut my time down would be greatly apreciated.
Turn, flesh and first salt, I average two hours a cape. some go quicker some don’t. Skull plate, I cut the big meat off, remove the membrane out of the skull cavity throw it in a tub of borax overnite then hit it on the wire wheel on my bird flesher and take off the remaining meat. I have simmered the Skull cap in a pot for a few minutes and the meat and stuff falls right off. As far as cutting your time down it takes a lot of practice to get fast and good results….I average about 15 minutes Skinning the head Then I turn and flesh. Unless no Deposit was left Then I just bag and tag and freeze….DC
I can turn a deer cape in 6 minutes (split lips, nose, eyes, turn ears) and I can usually flesh 10 per hour if they do not have huge chunks of meat….that being said I do over a 1000 capes a year (turn and flesh, not mount) and have been doing it for ten years
I have always used #10 scalpel blades for the turning, razor sharp out of the package and 1 per deer then I throw it away. I also use ear openers, it takes practice to learn them well but can be a huge time saver.

OfflineHoly smokes! Do you guys turn the lips all the way before salting or do you just get them close and finish turning them after they are tanned? Wire wheel for the skull caps is a good idea. Thanks guys. I use SB-60 scalpels for everything and I use ear turners but I take my time turning those ears because Im scared of blowing one open again. I do have a bird flesher wire wheel thing so maybe I’ll give that a shot
