Will slip stablize?

I have just finished the *hardest* mounting of my attempts so far. It was a bobcat that must have had an older or poorly done wet tan. The wet tan had been allowed to partially dry before being placed in the freezer and then shipped to me. Now I bought this cat at a HUGE discount because I was told the tan might be bad. The poor critter just started sheding and slipping, it was very stretchy skin but it needed to be handled with kid gloves.

Anyway, I got it on the form (I’m covered in the world’s softest fur), since the fur is so long the slip is not terribly noticeable. My question is once the hide dries will the hair stabilize and anchor? I had a fox with a little slip a while back and once it was dry it seemed to stop slipping, but it wasn’t a fraction as bad as this guy.

I suppose I can just wait a few days and I’ll find out. But I’d like to know what others have experienced.

As it dries it should tighten up. You will have to wait and see. I wouldn’t handle it a lot for the next few days. Did you use a good hide paste?

I used McKenzie hide paste. Thanks, I’ll just leave it be for a week.

Try spaying it down with denatured alcohol. A taxidermist told me he has done it before on some hides with minimal slippage and it works. He has been in the business for thirty years and mount a smoking deer.

With fur this thick I would think that I would have to soak it in the stuff before it got to the skin. I can see that working well on a short furred deer, perhaps I’ll give that a try on the face where the fur is shorter.
