Ok, all this talk about Charter Members and Master Taxidermist has gotten me to thinking a little.
First off it was mentioned that the “Clique” is undermining and tearing down what the Charter and Masters Members have done for 31 years.
31 years would make the first show/meeting have been in 1981. How many of those “Charter” members are still attending the shows and when was the last time any of them competed?
In 1981 I was 12 years old so I need a little help. Where was it held, who was there, and when was the first NCTA Competition and when was the Masters Division added and did that disgrace any Charter Members?
I’m gonna throw out a few names of who I think was there. If I leave anyone out or have someone there who wasnt there I apoligize.
Im just trying to figure out exactly who we disgraced this weekend with the vote we took.
Here is my list, and I’am strickly shooting in the dark, as I have know idea who was there when I was 12 years old.
Rick and Marsha Morgan(Im not sure if Jeremy was born then, but he could have been there.;))
Larry Mckenzie
Dennis Smith
Mike Gillis
Tom Smith
Mr. Nethercutt( Sorry Page don’t remember your dads name)
James Ingram
Donnie Wheeler
Woody Wilson
Roger Martin
Joe Morgan
Am I close or way off base? Who was the first President?
D- The word clique(S) was used as a plural not clique. It seems that in so many taxidermy organizations these groups have been formed. It is very sad to me that a lot of us have lost sight of what a show/ taxidermy organization is for. Isn’t LEARNING from others the reason for these shows/organizations?
The 3rd on your list (Dennis Smith) stated that it was a disgrace and James Ingram had no clue as to what was happening because he wasn’t informed of what was happening prior to the meeting.
As for the first show and the first member, I believe it was held in Apex NC and Bruce Bolick was the president. If this wasn’t the first show and president it was the second, I know this because I was there and remember Bruce mounting a bob white quail for a seminar.
Hope this clarifies a few things.

When it was mentioned in front of me the statement was “there is a clique”

Thats what I was thinking the entire time we were discussing seperating the birds into 2 seperate categories.
James Ingram had no clue as to what was happening because he wasn’t informed of what was happening prior to the meeting.
Did he not read his newsletter?
I’ve stayed quiet long enough. I can see this is not gonna die peacefully.
Brian, Im not gonna argue with you about what I heard. I believe there were six other people sitting there when it was said.
I don’t “Clique” with anyone. I do not follow anyone. I’m a big boy and can make my on decisions and I don’t need a “Clique” to make me feel big, bad and powerful or egotistical. Thats what a “Clique” is and does.
Thats why I am banned from taxinet, because I kept butting heads with the “Clique” there. When I wouldn’t give in and stood my ground they just blocked my account. Chicken Crap, I know!!!
There are way to many people who need to grow some nads or backbone and stand for something, or they will fall for anything.
I’m not falling for it, there is more to this story than is being said. Melissa is supposedly upset because of multiple ribbons and is not coming back to the NCTA and has resigned as the secretary. Then over on another post she said you 2 will be supporting other state associations, which I think is wonderful. I do the same thing.
Here is the kicker, she mentioned SC and WVA, ummmm, they already have multiple ribbons in place in the Masters division.
Please Explain this double standard. And, if we are gonna continue to drag this out, I would like to know what the real gripe is. Because it is not multiple ribbons in Masters.
Also, we hashed out the splitting of the bird category in that same meeting and I didn’t hear any whining when that vote was tallied because it went in y’alls favor.
Ever heard of give and take?
I have done a little research today on the first NCTA meeting. I personally talked to 3 “Charter Members” that were at the very first meeting, today. Some of the info is scetchy, after all it has been 31 years now.
It was held in Salisbury, NC, (everyone seemed to agree it was in 1981) at a Holiday Inn that is no longer there. It was torn down and a new one has now been built.
Presiding over this meeting was John Trexler of Liberty, NC. He has since past away.
Also attending was as follows.
Dennis and Pat Smith
Larry McKenzie
Donnie Wheeler
Irvin Mansfield (Only had one arm, amazing to be a taxidermist, right)
Gerald Nethercutt
Rick and Marsha Morgan
Don and Greta Paith
Terry Erlich
Jim Allred
There was conflicting stories. Someone said Larry Quinn and his wife was there and she was pregnant. Another said no it was Tom Powell and his wife was the pregnant one. So maybe one couple was there or both and at least one of them were expecting.
I was told there were many other people who turned out for this meeting as it was highly advertised. After the meeting was over, they all went on a tour to Larry McKenzies first (yellow) buiding in down town Granite Quarry before he moved it out into the country where it is today.
The second meeting/show was held at Don Murrey’s BBQ in Raleigh, which also has since been torn down. From what I gather, this is where the first NC state competition was held.
After that it gets a little scetchy, as to when it was where. But there was one of the early shows held at the Armory down at Southport, as well as the Armory in Raleigh on Blue Ridge Rd. Also one of the first shows was held at the Museum of Life And Science in Durham NC.
And as Bryan mentioned, there was one held in Apex NC, but it seemed to have been in the mid to late 80’s.
I’m gonna work on it some more and see how much I can actually find out.
Oh, by the way, the 3 “Charter Members” I spoke with did not feel “DISGRACED” when I told them what was passed at the meeting this weekend.
One did say they would have voted against it, but will not loose any sleep over it. These 3 people are still very much active in this industry every day, and they do keep up with what is going on.
D- you are correct, there is a lot more going on here than opinions on multiple ribbons. Are you calling me a liar? I know what I heard also. CLIQUES was the operative word. Obviously you will believe what you want and that’s fine, we all have our own opinions.
As far as going to Wva and SC, I probably will go to those among other shows, and may not compete at any of them. I am going to see old friends that I have met over the years from other states. We haven’t been able to do that in 5 years because all of Melissa’s vacation has been spent at Surry and NC shows. It has nothing to do with multiple ribbons. I have competed there before and carried home plenty, BTW I’ll give them to you if you want but you can’t have my score sheets or the knowledge that I gained from my critiques. 🙂
While “we” are throwing mud let’s make sure everyone knows that YOU, off and on for 3 months, tried to persuade Melissa to quit as secretary. Don’t try denying it because we have saved every facebook conversation that you 2 have had.
The splitting of the birds was a great idea but it was not mine and I’ve already heard, ” Well now we’re going to need open mouth/ closed mouth and long/short hair deer separated.” Not so, waterfowl and non-waterfowl have totally different skeletal structures. Whether a deer has it’s mouth opened or closed, long or short hair, it still has the same anatomy.
I have tried to be as diplomatic as possible throughout everything that has gone on, why don’t we stop this and you pick up the phone and call me. 704-732-3294
Thanks for the support Page – Bryan and I both appreciate it!
D – I was the one who made the comment about cliques, I KNOW what I said. I’m sorry you apparently have a hearing problem but my exact words were, “I don’t like the little cliques that have been formed within the NCTA”. I did not say clique – it was CLEARLY plural. I know what I know and I know what I said. You have a problem with it, you call ME!
Also, I do not have a double standard, as I told you on another post, I did not quit over the multiple ribbons as everyone ASSumes. If anyone would have listened to me, they would know that. I am highly opposed to it as I held the NCTA to a higher standard but it is what it is. I will support other associations that treat their members as family, like the NCTA used to – I will support other associations that don’t imply that some of their own lie and steal. I will support them because they don’t…..awww, well, it doesn’t matter now, does it???

Sorry, but you have nothing on me. Looks like this will just have to die a slow painful death. I will not play these high school games.
Can we all just get along. We can agree and disagree but at the end of the day it does not matter. We should not be judging each other on who said this or who said that. It does not matter. There is a lot more important things going on in this world then the NCTA and ribbons. Do any of you think Jesus is happy with you with the way you are acting about this! Do you think God wants you fighting back and fourth with your brother and sister in Christ over something so stupid! No I do not think so. You know we all need to look at how God has blessed us with the NCTA and how he has let it grow to where it is today. Stuff like this that is going on he does not like. He can just as easily take it away as he gave it. Instead of fighting with each other about who said what or ribbons and who is going to have power over the NCTA, we should be focusing our time in what God wants for the NCTA. How can this association do his work. We should do more to help the sick children, help the sick and poor, help our military vets. There is so much we can do, but instead we are on here wasting time fighting over something that at the end of day when we leave this place it will not matter. I want everyone that is upset to sit down and really think about this and pray. God is this the way you want me to act. Am I doing what you want me to do. I believe that if all of you do this he will give you the answer you are looking for and tell all of you that in your own way you are wrong! We need to join together as brothers and sisters in Christ and build the NCTA to where he wants it. Stop wasting time on the stupid childish stuff. Instead of placing idols on all the awards and ribbons we want we should be placing idols on God and what we can do to serve him. We should do more then just get together once a year and compete. We should get together at other times and just get away from the taxidermy part and help people in need and serve God and show how thankful we are as a association. Gary Chandler
Not getting into the cliques part of this but a few of the first shows were held in Smiithfield NC. If some one likes i can see if Jim Williams at Eastern carolina Taxidermy still has our history. At the 25th anniversary show he gave a talk on our history. I actually gave him some older newsletters to saved is or archives. Hopefully he still has it asb
back then he was our historian.
