I recently acquired some old mule deer antlers. The fur is still on a couple of them and I want to remove it so I can use them without damaging the antler. I was simmering with sal-soda but got concerned that the natural color of the antlers would be damaged. Am I worrying too much? Is there a better way without risk? Thanks for any help.

I am only trying to clean the skull plate so I can use them for practice mounting. They are not in velvet. A few years ago it seems I remember when I was cleaning some whitetail antlers I lost some of the natural coloring on the bottom part of the antlers during the simmering process. I am trying to avoid a repeat of this!
