Hi , this is my first ever post and i know nothing on taxidermy so please forgive anything
i might get wrong ,
I have been given an old pair of steerhorns which are quite dirty , i would like to try and mount
them but have no idea how to do it ??
Firstly im after some help on how to clean them but not lose the antique look and also
on how to mount them, what materials to use and where to buy them ,( like what do i use to stick them together ), i have looked everywhere
for referrances on how to do this but cant find anything !
If this is some sort of secret way of doing it and nobody wants to share it i totaly understand and
my apologies for asking , but any help would be fantastic ,
thanks Rich

Welcome to the site Rich.

If this is what you are trying to do, there are a couple of different ways to go about it. A lot depends on how long and heavy each horn is.

If the sheath openings of the horns are large enough, you can get a round fence post from Lowe’s and cut to the length you desire. Insert the end into one horn and put small wood screws through the horn into the wood, line up the second one and do the same thing. You may have to cut or grind the ends of the wood down to a cone shape so it will slide up into the sheath. Get you some cow hide or any leather or material and wrap around connections and the post. Trim with rope or braided leather and screw a panel to the back with a hanger and you are done.

If to small for post, you can use a 2″ X 4″ or 2″ X 2″ and Bondo it into the horns and use Mache’ or POP with hardware cloth to get your round shape around the wood and finish off the same way.

Hope all that makes sense.
