I have read that longhorns should have a portion of the bony horn cut back to gain access to the open horn center. In this way they can be cleaned and degreased on the inside of the horn.. That sounds reasonable but do the other animals with true horns need the same thing done…I’m talking about sheep and goats. If that is the case, do Antelope need the same thing? I know their sheath is totally different soooooo –  how it is treated when putting everything back together?

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me

Judy, most horn is actually hardened hair. on almost all horned game, there is a soft pedicule between the actual hair, and the hardened part of the horn. without that, your cape and horns will never fit. it has to be duplicated when finishing.  there is, a bone core to all horned game. some horned sheaths can be removed and some not. most, after cleaning and drying, cut the core to a stub on the skull plate. use your favorite adhesive to bond the cleaned horn to the skull plate bone stubs. when dry, rebuild the soft pedicule  with the material of your choice. hope this helps Judy

Thank you for the information, and it does help. I think I was just making things harder than it really is.

Judy
