I was wondering if anyone can give me any info on the PT 500 paint on tan that doesn’t require a pickle bath. Is the result similar to a krowtanned hide? How is the stretch? Shrinkage? Thanks for your input in advance.

The 500 is more of a liquid preserve, there is no acid in it to pickle the skin. The TT581 from HQ has it’s on pickling agents added, that may be more of what you are looking for.

The HQ5000 is used with a pickled and shaved skin.

No, I was curious about the end result using the PT 500. I’m trying to find someone who has used it and can give some info into the type of skin it produced. Thanks!

The 500 has all the stretch you want. It will stretch like a Dp’ed skin.

I use all HQ tanning products . Works on varmints to deer . Tanned my whitetail I competed with last year with HQ 5000 . Still looks just like it did last year . All the detail is still there . Good choice of tans .

I have been considering getting the PT500 also but somehow (maybe I am just too old to accept it otherwise) if don’t feel right about not doing the pickle bath process. Will this still work even after a pickle? Will it be any better or worse for doing the pickle bath step? (I use safety acid)

Vic, if you are going to pickle the skins, you need to use the HQ5000 from Head Quarters Supply instead of the PT500.

D’s right . Get HQ 5000 . I’ve used it over two years on badgers , coons , coyotes , deer . It’s an excellent tan . Always consistent .
