Due to constant inquiries about a pickle and shave only service, CFD is now offering “Pickle and Shave” from your PREPPED AND SALT DRIED skins. At this point, this is only on North American skins. This service will allow you several options in which you have not been afforded in the past with commercial tanneries.

#1 You can use what ever paint on tan or submersible tan you prefer.

#2 It will allow you more control over your skins in house.

#3 It will get your skins back to you faster.

#4 If you do all tanning in house this will save you valuable time and

#5 You do not have to worry about the hazards of handling and discarding your pickle solutions into your septic system, dumping them on the ground or into the city waste water(Which could be a serious fine if you get caught).

#6 Most of all it will save you money.

Your skins will be pickled in a Formic Acid Pickle just like we do all our skins. The average person can’t obtain Formic without all kinds of regulation issues and it is by far the best acid for taxidermy tanning. They will be shaved and then returned to you frozen. All you have to do is neutralize your skins thoroughly, apply your favorite paint on tan or add skins to your submersible tan(if using a submersible tan, neutralize after tanning step) and follow their instructions from there.

If you use/prefer HQ5000 it can be shipped with your skins to save additional shipping charges.

The price of this service will be 70% of our listed tanning prices in our new 2012/2013 CFD price list you should be receiving in the coming days.

So for instance a Whitetail cape is $49.75, 70% of that = $34.83

If you are interested in using this service for your skins, YOUR BOX AND PACKING SLIP MUST CLEARLY BE MARKED “PICKLE AND SHAVE ONLY”

Due to the unknown response to this service, we will except skins for this service up and until further notice here in this thread.

I think you need to edit your first part D. I couldn’t figure out why anyone would have you pickle and tan without shaving, pickle and shave makes more sense!

O.k. Carolina( I hope) is about to help Honey bee man out. I’m so far behind it’s pathetic. I have 10 bear,20 deer ,5 porkers,2fox,and 2 bobcats. All my deer coming in this season will be headed your way. I need to free up some of my time so i can mount. It may not seem like alot to some but for a part time man working 2000 hives plus 20 acres of blue berries and taxidermy, i need another jobbbbb!

Yes that is a lot for a part timer. Just send them on and mark the packing slip clearly what you want done. The earlier you get it to us the quicker the turn around will be. So if that is all last years stuff, you may want to go ahead and get it in front of this up coming season’s skins.

Michael, we kicked around the idea and decided that with all the different tans out there and the fact that they have different neutralizing instructions we decided to let the taxidermist neutralize the skins.

Plus the fact that for paint on tans you need to neutralize before you add the tan, and submersible tans would be neutralized after the tanning process, this factored into our decision as well.

We discussed offering the option of us neutralizing or the taxidermist, but we decided that could lead to possible mix ups and someones skins not getting neutralized and they thought they were, which could lead to an entire different set of problems.

Therefore, thats the reasons we are offering the service this way.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

D. I have a Canadian Whitetail and Mule deer I need this done on. I will be using HQ5000 which I already have :). Never used Carolina for tanning before, so how do I need to mark my hides for this kind of service? Will it be the same as tanning service? Gary

Yes Gary, just prepare the skins as normal, salt and dry the skins and drop them off. Mark the outside of the box as well as your packing slip “PICKLE AND SHAVE ONLY”. You can put attention to me if you wish. You can download our packing slip here.
