I must add I know ive seen newly mounted Dp mounts that were beautiful. But I know a local taxidermist thats been in busyness for 40 years. He is a perfectionists. He’s old school.but long ago started tanning because it didn’t take long to figure out Dp skins didn’t stay where he put them. Still tan’s today.
Hi, my name is John Mellis & I’ve been tanning for almost 24 years now. I had a relapse 11 years ago when I needed to help a customer get a head ready by Christmas for a needy child. Long story how that went. Exposing myself to the DP really caused some issues but much time spent on the phone with my sponsor got me over it. Not gonna do that again. I’ve been clean ever since.

I’m proud to say I have never been a user, but I can only imagine what you recovering DP’ers go through every day. I’m sure just the sight of white powder could push you off the wagon.
But hang in there guys everyday you stay clean, is another day closer to freedom from this dreaded addiction.
Oh, and the deer appeciate it also.
I still do both, I personnally like mounting a tanned hide, I was just stateing that you can mount a quality dp deer, just as you can mount a tanned piece of junk. Page I see over stretched hides all the time, I measure the meat not the outside of the skin. If thats not possible, I go an inch smaller on my skin measurement. an over stretched hide will not stay in place… Its the taxidermist not the process. If its done correctly, You have a quality mount either way……..I can get extreme detail and it stays, I don’t do it unless its asked for…DC

I believe that ED Piaskowski just a few years ago, won the best whitetail award with DP. I tried to look up the year but couldn’t find it. I send all my hides to Carolina Fur but if done correctly, I don’t see anything wrong with DP. It actually takes longer to do a deer with DP but excellent results can still be had with it. Around the eyes do get darker but the nose pad seems to hold its color fairly well with DP. We had a guy here in WV,(Bob Cline who is now retired), that used only DP and his mounts were always incredible. He was able to get great detail over the entire mount and his ears were second to none. Like i said, I use a tanned skin but this was just some food for thought. Like was said earlier, it’s the taxidermist that makes the mount.
