I am new at this but I don’t understand why birds and fish don’t crack? What about small animals? At Surry I went to the squirrel seminar, if I remember right David
didn’t glue it. What does dp do to the skin?

When skinning and fleshing birds and fish they seem so fragile. Once degreased , tanned or preserved while mounting as the skin starts to dry it toughens up considerably. When using the right size form and a good glue there’s no reason for cracking. For some a commercial squirrel fleshed , degreased and dp applied is sufficient . He may have appled glue after seminar.

most guys who dp are using a biz. model that works. the dp method allows for a little cheaper price and quick turn around. Lets face it hunters are excited and want to know when will they get it back. Honestly i feel you can be successful by dp ing or tanning. dp=cheaper and faster there is a market for that tanning in my opinion, gives a better mount that will look better LONGER than a dp deer and there is a market for that.

I was taught by a guy who only dped for 30 yrs his argument was always this why tan?? the customers want it back before they forget what it looks like and they dont want to pay 500 for a head. to him why do more than you have to when there is a market that will pay 350 for a head and dont mind their heads being dped..

heres my take it boils down to the type of customer you want and your particular location. some areas have a higher end clientel some dont and the type of people often varies as well if you get my drift.

i like taxidermy. when i mount a head i dont see dollar signs. i enjoy each deer and my goal is to do my best. the guy that taught me was good he was my taxidermist before he was my teacher. the heads he did for me do not look like they did years ago or as good as tanned mounts ive seen with the same age.

mount 100 heads a year for 500 each or mount 200 a year for 350 thats my take

avid hunters know more about taxidermy today than 20 years ago. Some New customers ask me how I tan every year. Few years back I never was asked. Those who used dp incorrectly which was many left behind a bad memory instead of a good one. To me it really doesn’t take much longer to properly tan. So why chance repeat customers. They keep coming back and send new customers . That’s how good taxidermist stay in busyness. A good tan is cheap insurance.
