Good morning all. While sewing holes on a coon hide I’ve noticed it’s still a little bit greasy. I fleshed it, used Kemol 4 to degrease it and then put it in Krowtan for 5 days. I removed it and did the final fleshing. My question is this. Because I’m going to degrease it again, will it need to go back into Krowtann again. Or, will it be ok without being Krowtanned a second time. Thanks for the help.

Have you neutralized it yet? How long are you planning on degreasing it a second time?

If it just needs a 15 minute wash/degrease I would neutralize it then degrease it and freeze or mount it. If you want to degrease it longer I would put it back in the Krowtann. That is just my opinion, I dont use Krowtann so someone else my have a better suggestion.

Yes it’s been neutralized. 15 minutes would be the max time I would degrease it. It’s ready to mount other then degreasing it again and maybe putting it back in Krowtann.

If it was me, I was wash it in some degreaser and salt water then mount it. If you put it back in Krowtan it will have to be neutralized again.

Ok, I was thinking along those lines. Just a question, it may be dumb, but why degreaser and salt water? Why not just the degreaser?

When you put a skin in any liquid solution without salt it will swell up, technically reffered to as osmotic swell
