Ok i am getting ready to flesh, pickle and tan a deer and coyote cape both still frozen on the animal. Here is the procedure i WANT to use but am unsure of the results. As i skin and flesh the animals i will salt them, then split the eyes lips nose etc, wash the salt off ,and go into the pickle. Now do i need to leave them heavily salted for 24 hrs to drain before the pickle??? I realize the pickle solution will have salt in it but is the salting step needed ? Also planning on degreasing the coyote should i put the degreaser in the pickle or do a separate degreasing solution after pickling and shaving? I will be using JRTS tanning cream i bought last year for these projects. Thanks for the help One other question i was thinking about during the summer i will be working in a non air conditioned shed if i do indeed salt the skins and leave them to drain in say 85-95 temps will that ruin the skins?

I’ll let D. or jeremy give you a detailed answer, but I always salt at least 24 hours on larger skins…DC

The directions on the JRTS only say pickle for rugs or large mammals. Are you going to pickle the deer just to get a better skin?
If you are going to pickle it, I would defiantly salt the skin before hand, doesnt have to be 24 hours, just till it stops dripping fluids. Make sure the pH is low, 1.5.
You may want to split the face, salt it, flesh the skin, salt again, hang and let drain for a few hours, then put in the pickle.

If it was me I would add the degrease to the pickle, then after I neutralize the skin do a quick degrease/wash in some warm salt water for about 10 minutes.

Bacteria that will cause slippage is going to grow quicker in a hot shed. Once the skins are in the pickle they will be fine, again, keep the pH down. You are going to want to get them fleshed and salted fairly quick though.
