In using Hq5000 the direction state to salt until hard unless i read them incorrectly? I currently let hides salt until they stop dripping and then give and additional day then into the reyhrdation bath and then to the pickle. What is the advantages of salting until stiff and/or dry?

It just insures that all the body fluids are removed from the skin.

My best results have been from salting, hanging for a day then re-salting and hanging for a few more days and putting in the rehydration then pickle before they got dried too hard. They are more relaxed and easier to shave that way

When a cape dries hard the cell structures are crushed, allowing better removal of un-tanables during pickling and better penetration of tanning agents.

Additionally if you already have your pickle pre-mixed you can skip the salt stage completely and go straight to pickle. Although most of the time your not going to pickle and tan just one cape at a time. Just something I picked up along the way.
