Tanned my first 2 skunks together recently and i just cant seem to get them to break down… maybe I didn’t shave them down think enough, maybe i didn’t use the right oil, or maybe i should invest in an actual tumbler instead of using the clothes dryer… I don’t know…
I have used the Lutan F on quite a few possums and raccoons and they have all came out just fine. I am also using neatsfoot oil, I’m not a big fan of the smell, but it seems to work ok on all my other tans. Anybody had similar problems… or does anybody have NO problems at all, because then I’d just wanna know how you do it.. Thanks guys.

Remove from tan rinse let it drain towel dry few minutes then rub on libiral amount softening oil. Hang up in warm room till roughly 60% dry then tumble.I use gloves and rub on a good thick layer of oil.drying after oiling evaporates water and oil soaks in to the corium fibers bonding so skin stays soft.
Thanks again, I’m definitely gonna change how I’ve been doing things. I had been letting the hide drain for about an hour, then rubbing in the neatsfoot oil, and THEN I had been putting the oiled hide in a pillow case with wood chips. Zip tying the pillow case and putting in my clothes dryer, with no heat. I’ll be ordering the white softening oil very soon. I put the skunks in a bucket of water today to see if i could rehydrate them and try re oiling them again later on. Do you think that will help? Also, I have 2 VERY LARGE hog hides and a bobcat that I will be tanning out. I havent done a hog or a bobcat so I’m a little worried that I’ll mess em up. Especially since they’re for a friend of mine. He also has his first ever coyote that he wants me to mount for him. He knows it wont be perfect since I’m just starting to learn, but if you have any tips for tanning any of them it would be a great help. Hopefully I’ll be able to help those who helped me on here… eventually.
Bobcats are thin not much to flesh.you’ll be ok. Hog’s very greasy.remove as much meat, fat and membrane as youcan.double salt.rehydrate in salt water and degrease real well before going into pickle.add degreaser to your pickle as well.after pickling for three day’s shave till you begin to see hair roots then degrease well before neutralizing.headquarters degreaser is by far the best ive used.it will cut the grease.then tan at the correct ph, rinse, towel dry and apply softening oil. With coyotes gettem skinned and salted as soon as they thaw because their loaded with bacteria. They will slip hair if you leavem Layin around skinned or not. Tt581 would be a more simple method for the varmints. Its simple with good results.
