Is it common to recieve capes from a tannery that the ears have been cut/split, and have the epidermis skin peel off around the eyes and have the eyelids cut and have hair pull out of the cape with ease? Seems unacceptible to me? I expect to have to do some final sewing of bullet holes, and remove ear cartlidge, and tirm up around the eyes, nose and mouth, but man I feel I was taken on this batch of capes. Can anyone reccomend a good tannery?
Alot of problems don’t originate with the tannery. Use a fan to help dry out your capes. Too much humidity and warm days here at home will keep them from curing properly, thus some hair slippage. Also, how long did the client ride him around showing him off? That’s the biggest issue we face! Next, fold your ears and cabletie them. The weight of the other skins in the drum can cause torn ears. And make sure you spilt the eyelids all the way to the glands to keep from getting epidermal slippage. Most tanneries do a great job, but problems can arise. It’s part of being in this business. Carolina Fur does great work, but it all starts with you and the hunter.
