Is there a difference between professional dry, soft and garment tanning or is all the same thing?

Yes there is a difference. What are you looking to do?

I was planning to purchase a pelt to start with and wanted a firm understanding of the differences. I have an Alaskan wolf that was garment tanned that I really like. I wasn’t sure what the dry and soft tanning difference was.

I’d be real leery about one they say is garment tanned, chances are it won’t be mountable, or will take a lot of extra work to mount. Ask about the lips, eyes, ear cartilage and feet, namely the pads, see what they say.

I might be wrong. Maybe my wolf is soft tanned. It’s super soft and very flexible. Is dry tan much stiffer and needs to rehydrated before mounting? When the tanner says its a soft tan does that mean it’s soft and flexible and can be used for mounting or plushes?

A soft tan can be rehydrated per the tanner’s instructions and mounted, a garment tan is done the same way but like Keith said it could be missing lips, feet etc. and will probably be split up to the chin, anything that you buy soft, dry or garment tanned confirm with the seller that it is mountable

Thanks for handling that guys. Sorry Tesa for taking so long to get back to you. But these guys said pretty much what I would have.

The soft and dry tan could be considered the same thing, depending on who you are talking to and could be for taxidermy purposes or just wall hangers. Always ask if it is mountable if thats what you are wanting to do with it. Pictures would be even better.

…And what they said about garment tanning.
