horror stories.
I believe I can manage to punch my customer numbers in the cape in a different place than the tannery uses. (Probably would want a tag of some kind too is that safe I don’t want anything ripped off. So if you punch and tag where should the tag go?)
I have determined too that I need a contract with the customer (informing them that the cape may be sent out and that I am not responsible for the possible loss of the cape)
However, I like a customer reading such a clause, I would want to know what my course of action or possible resolutions to such problems would be.
I hear stories of ripped off ears, legs, etc… sure I can sew but what does the tannery do if this happens?
If a cape slips and is lost? How do they know it was or wasnt properly cared for (by the hunter, taxidermist etc… before it got to them)? What happens then?
I have heard of taxidermist not receiving capes (and/or parts of skins) back and the tannery not finding them. A deer cape can be replaced easy enough but what happens if it’s a Mountain lion, Mountain goat, Big Horn etc….or part of a lifesize is lost or destroyed?
Thanks, John
I realize this happens possibly 1 out of 1000 times but I am a believer in “Hope for the best but plan for the worst”
Thanks, John
John you are way over thinking this thing. Waterproof tyvex or number tags in earbutt attached with high quality tie wraps + punch your code where ever the tannery you decide to use does not punch their code.
All the other worries you mentioned, if you are dealing with a reputable tannery they will rectify any problems that may arise if it is deemed their fault. If its just a hole here or there or a thin spot where the hair may fall out you are expected to be able to fix it if you are a true taxidermist, because things do happen.
As far as a skin slipping and trying to determine what caused it, the tannery will run loads of say Whitetail capes up to 160 at a time, if one slips, it was not the tanneries issue if 159 were fine….if you have 20 capes of the 160 and 10 of your capes slip and no one else’s does, you have a prepping issue. If the tannery screws up the entire load would have issues. If something is lost or ruined it will be replaced, if you are dealing with a trustworthy tannery.
Next time you are in Raleigh, stop by and I will show you around CFD and how everything works…..not trying to solicit your work, just trying to ease your fears.
Hope this helps.
Yeah I know I am bad about over thinking and analyzing things to death. I would like a tour sometime. I am thinking about this seriously now because I start a new job Monday and wont have as much time off. I will be working 5 days a week where I was working a 4 on x 4 off schedule. Thanks, for the reply.
John
John D gave you some good advise. I send out everything i mount to have tanned usually a crate full at a time. I have had very little problems and nothing i couldnt fix. I use CF. Take the tour if you get a chance it;s a nice place. There is one tannery in SC i would stay away from if you want to know who it is pm me. And id stay away from those just starting tannerys. Some may be good but i know some are not. Its a gamble if you do.
I went to the city but I didn’t fit in!

I plan to us CF just and just had a call about a buffalo so I guess it will be sooner than I thought cause I am not tanning a buffalo. He wants the head shoulder mounted and the rest soft tanned for a throw. Would it be best to dry tan the entire thing and soak up the shoulder cape or do them separate?
Buffalo are a big job for sure. I get 1500 shoulder and on the back hide whatever the tannery charges doubled plus shipping is usually how i figure prices on soft tanning.
