OfflineHi Guy’s, anybody have experience with buffalo? I need to cape one out for shoulder mount, and am wondering about the horns. I see that most of the forms I have found have the horn bases molded on already. I assume I just need the horn sleeve off the bone and not the skull plate. Would I just rot it off in water as I have for long horn steers or is there another way to remove the horn? I just did a muskox this fall but, used the skull plate for that guy. I am slow thawing the head in my cooler for now so, any help is appreciated. Thank you, Jeff
it’s been awhile since I did a buffalo, but if I remember right we used the horn base molded on the form. You could rot it off, but I believe they came off relatively easily.

Even if you use the skull plate you need to remove the sheaths from the cores so you can clean the meat out of there. Macerate them off.
You could also use reproduction sheaths.
